My friends Mary and Jacy recently got engaged, and I was so excited to be a part of the sweet, sweet day. It was extra special because I remember hearing about their first date….and now this!
So much love and care went into Jacy’s proposal plan – he called all us girls to rendezvous from our various cities of residence and we lead Mary to different spots in their city that are significant to them. Each stop had a new friend, a new letter, a new picture waiting.
It all led to Jacy on (another) friend’s front porch, looking dapper with a bunch of roses…and Mary running straight into his arms. Well, after the blindfold came off.
I thought maybe she wouldn’t let him go long enough for him to drop to his knee.
But she let go, one knee hit the floor, and he asked The Question, and she said YES. yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes. We cheered, we teared, it was beautiful.
Here is a picture of the ring:
And some more shots of the lovely couple…y’all does Mary not have the best facial expressions?!:
And when she was spent with excitement and emotion and trying to let it all sink in – her family drove and flew in from this place and that place and surprised her yet again…yes it was quite a day for our friend Mary.
What makes this engagement all the more perfect are the hard times and bittersweetness that led up to the moment. All the moments of wondering if there would be anyone for her. All the bad dates to find the good one, the one that was “not awkward or horrible!”
Then the process of getting to know each other, the ups and downs that occur when two people start to share their lives piece by piece.
Of course, there is always that question that every girl wonders – will anyone find me, choose me, love me enough to want to keep me – all of me – forever? And the answer was always, yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes.
Often in times of waiting, we feel doubt and insecurity…but, if we listen closely there is God-With-Us, whispering:
“I’ve always been here. I’ve always wanted you, loved all of you. I’ve always chosen you for eternity from the beginning of time. Don’t worry. I have a plan, it’s a good plan, something to prosper you and not to harm you. Wait, be still, know that I am God. No matter the season you are in, I am the same yesterday, today, and forever. Nothing can separate you from My love. So hold onto your joy, hold onto your hope, hold onto your thanksgiving, never stop believing in me – because you can always trust that what I have for you is for your good and for My glory.”
This engagement is something fresh and something new, a precursor to a covenant promise that will take Mary and Jacy into the adventure that is marriage.
CONGRATULATIONS you crazy kids, thanks for letting us be a part of your lives!!!
